Freckles...
With a jolt, while escaping a nightmare, I wake. The clock reads well past midnight, and my friend is still in the same position, out like a light. I whisper her name. She doesn’t respond. I kneel to her height on the couch and look at the freckles speckled on top of her forehead. They drift down to her cheekbones and nose. I’d never noticed them before. I want to touch my lips to them, to rub them with my fingers, but I don’t. I tap her on the back and gently wake her.
She looks confused for a second and then seems to figure out where she is.
