She taps my shoulder, “Go see her, she’d love to hear a friendly voice, she’s,” her voice cracks, “she’s lost a lot.”
“How’s the lil one?”
She sniffles, “I don’t know, doctors won’t tell me. Her sister will be here soon. She’ll know more. I’m heading out, so if you want a quick minute you better head up now.”
I stand up, my purpose here solidified.
“Thank you, Teresa. It’s mighty fine to finally meet you,” I say as the fella next to her clears his throat.
She looks at him, “And this is my friend Christopher, he’s a neurosurgeon, he’s been consulting on the case.”
I nod. This man doesn’t seem to like me, I don’t seem to like him, ain’t no point in shaking his hand. Seems like a pompous Yankee anyhow.
“I’ll be on my way, y’all have a good one,” I say.
“Bye Mitch.” I hear from behind me. I raise my hand in a bye while I walk away. The purpose my body felt simply needed permission to make it move.
