Delia wakes up in the hospital
My eye’s flicker. People are surrounding me. Lots of white coats and blue scrubs.
“Hi, Delia, I’m Doctor Mitchell, this is Dr. Smith. I’m your surgeon and he’s consulting on the case.”
I clear my throat and feel pain. I whisper, “Where?”
“You’re in the hospital dear, you’ve been in an accident.”
I close my eyes and remember riding in the car. We’d left Rose’s dance recital and were on the way home. I remember the lights coming toward us showing no signs of stopping.
“My family?”
Both doctors look around my face but not in my eyes. Something bad happened.
“You’re doing well, your vitals look good.”
“My family?” I say again.
Dr. Mitchell looks at Dr. Smith and they both frown.
“A social services worker will be in soon,” Dr. Mitchell replies.
What the hell does that mean?
